While many are enjoying a day off of work and school the Camp Bay Breeze Leadership Team is hard a work. Bones is lucky enough to have moral support as she works on tomorrows meeting agenda and finalizes the daily schedule for camp. Honeybee is busy collecting donations and organizing them. Cheeto is mailing out camp letters to the local emergency services and health department. Ali-Oop is working hard in her college classes as she prepares to graduate this spring. I wanted to share a little information about camp names. At Bay Breeze we use a camp name (nickname) for the week of camp. Why do we use camp names? Because it's FUN! Leaders are very dedicated to their camp names and once you use that name it is yours FOREVER. Sometimes you are given a camp name and other times you pick one. If you decide to select a name try to get one that is not already being used. Usually camp names are picked on or before training weekend for our volunteers.
I was given my nickname during training my first year at camp. Band-aid and Ace had already been used and I couldn't come up with a name. A fellow new leader said you should be Bones like that TV show. Bones was perfect but I saw myself as the Star Trek character (nerd alert). Since then I have collected a number of skeletons including my sidekick Fossil (named by a young girl at camp). I even get called Bones at work. Girls tend to change their camp names every year until they reach AITs. At that point we ask them to stick with a name. Sometimes a girl will choose a name but the leadership team changes it. My daughter wanted to be called something but I have always called her Boo. She gave up on being called anything else at camp because everyone started to call her Boo. Just know that this will be your name FOREVER. It will be yelled across the flag field during the week of camp and it will be used to call you in the grocery store. The girls and probably the adults remember your camp name, but have no idea what your real name is. Worried that you won't remember everyone's name. Every year campers will make a name button to wear each day. I have 11 buttons at home! The unit leaders should collect these at the end of each day, so the campers will have them to wear the next day. The campers may take them home on the last day of camp. Okay campers I challenge you to come up with a unique camp name that fits your personality. Bones Early registration for volunteers and their children closes on January 8th.
If you are interested in volunteering at camp you can register through ebiz on the GSCNC website. Once you are registered I can let you know what the discount code is to register your child/children. |
