Bay Breeze is a primitive camp located in the Calvert Cliffs State Park in Lusby. It is a wonderful, wooded setting with hiking trails which lead to a beach on the Chesapeake Bay manned by an all-volunteer staff. We provide a week of fun for girls from kindergarten-12th grade. We focus on girls experiencing the outdoors, developing outdoor skills like building a campfire, pitching a tent, sleeping outdoors and archery, as well as providing a way for girls to explore leadership, build skills, and develop an appreciation for nature. Our camp service roughly 180 girls from 3 local counties.
We are always looking for volunteers for camp. There are several options along with some flexibility.
We are always looking for volunteers for camp. There are several options along with some flexibility.
Adult volunteer discounts - camp offers a discount for campers if a parent/guardian volunteers for 3 or more full days at camp. We do not offer a discount to bus monitors or adults working less than 3 days.
Unit leaders - these volunteers come to camp to run the level units for the girls, boys or pixies. At a minimum there are 2 adults in each unit. Depending on the number of campers and their age level a trained teen volunteer (Aide) will be in the unit as well. Units will have planned activities as well as free time to explore the hiking trails or beach. Without the volunteers running these units, camp could not happen.

Rotation facilitators - these volunteers come to camp and run rotations. Camp offers slingshots for k-3 graders and archery for 4th-8th graders. The adults in this unit must have received certification from GSCNC. 2 adults are in these units.
Bus monitors - these volunteers do not come to camp. Our bus monitors are there to check the girls on the bus in the morning and to make sure every girl gets picked up in the afternoon. If we do not have bus monitors at a location, then we do not offer pick up. All of our campers ride the bus unless they are a child of an adult working on property.

Becoming an Adult Volunteer with GSCNC
Thank you so much for your interest in becoming a volunteer at a summer day or evening camp! Day and evening camps are 100% volunteer-run, and we couldn’t do it without your help. Before you have an amazing week or two of camp, there are vetting procedures and tasks that every adult volunteer needs to complete.
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Current Ambassador Girl Scouts who are 18 years old but are still in high school should wait until after graduation to complete their volunteer designation or background check. After graduation, please email [email protected] requesting to convert your account to an adult membership account for the rest of the 2022-2023 Girl Scout year, as well as for a login to be created for you on MyGS Sign In. Keep in mind that once your account has been converted to an adult account, you cannot register for Girl Scout events as a girl member (such as sleepaway camp), so please be sure to register for any summer girl member events prior to requesting a conversion of your account. Once your account has been converted and you have a login for MyGS Sign In, follow the rest of the steps in this tutorial.
- Get a current Girl Scout Adult Membership or Lifetime Membership through Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital.
- If you have a Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital membership or have had one in the past, visit Homepage (girlscouts.org) to login to My GS Sign In. From there, you will be able to see your active membership or purchase a new membership.
- If you have never had a Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital membership contact the membership coordinator at your local Council office for help with the process.
- Financial assistance is available for yearly adult memberships. For more information about financial assistance, please click here.
- Designate yourself as a camp volunteer on My GS Sign In. This must be done every year.
- This process is also known as “adding the role” to your Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital member profile. Each volunteer must re-designate themselves as a camp volunteer every year. Visit https://mygs.girlscouts.org/ to login to your My GS Sign In Member Profile
- Visit https://drive.google.com/file/d/1BABjcD6Q_7wxsa2xF1QV2RTsYkwveytp/view?usp=sharing to see instructions for this process. Make sure when you search for open volunteer roles that you put the zip code of where the camp is located.
- Zip Codes for our 2024 Day and Evening Camps can be found here.
- There should be no cost involved to designate yourself as a volunteer. If the screen is asking you to pay please contact the membership coordinator at your local Council office.
- Pass a background check through Sterling Volunteers.
- All day and evening camp volunteers, even part-time volunteers, are required to pass a Girl Scout background check.
- If you have already completed a valid background check for another Girl Scout role, such as a Troop Leader, you will not need to complete another background check. The one you already hold will be linked to your camp volunteer role and you will be marked as an active volunteer after designating yourself as a camp volunteer.
- If you have never completed a background check through Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital, you will automatically be sent an email from [email protected] after you have designated yourself as a camp volunteer. This email will contain a link to complete your background check for an $8.00 fee. This email frequently gets lost in spam or junk folders, so please check those folders. This link will expire after 24 hours, so be sure to complete it quickly! Until you complete this background check you will be listed as a “pending” volunteer. If you need the background check link re-sent, please email [email protected].
- Financial assistance is available for the background check fee. For more information about financial assistance, please click here.
- Register yourself and your children (if applicable) for camp on DoubleKnot.
- Go to DoubleKnot and select the unit you are looking for. You can create a DoubleKnot profile when you checkout, you do not need one beforehand. Your DoubleKnot login is separate from your My GS Login.
- Remember to register your Girl Scouts for camp on DoubleKnot based on their current 2022-2023 school year grade. Many camps offer Girl Scout camper discounts since you are volunteering - contact your camp director for a discount code to use. Financial aid is available for one day or evening camp per Girl Scout, per summer. Please visit Summer Day & Evening Camps | GSCNC and click the “Financial Assistance” dropdown for more information about financial aid.
- Some camps also offer units for children of volunteers, commonly known as Pixies (potty trained - age 5 and under) and Rangers (boy) units. Please contact the camp to confirm which volunteer children units are available at camp. Pixies and rangers will also need to be registered for camp through DoubleKnot so that the appropriate non-Girl Scout insurance amount can be taken out for camp and links to complete their health form can be sent to you. Financial aid for pixies and rangers is not available from Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital.
- Fill out an adult health form and health forms for your children.
- More information about health forms for both adults and children will be sent to you via email in the coming weeks.
- Attend camp training sessions set by the camp leadership team.
- Dates for training sessions vary by camp and are usually mandatory. Please contact the camp director to get more information about camp training sessions.
- Have an awesome time at camp!
